The original aluminium 'Navy' 1006 chair was designed to be used in submarines in 1944 by Emeco (The Electric Machine and Equipment Co.)
The company's manufacturing process is the result of a collaboration between Emeco and the US navy to develop a seaworthy chair for military use.
Today, Emeco designs include the Hudson and Icon by Philippe Stark, Superlight by Frank Gehry, the 1951 chair by BMW Designworks USA, 20-06 chair by Foster & Partners, the Nine 0 chair by Ettore Sottsass, and the Morgans chair by Andree Putman.
The chairs are still handmade in Hanover from 80% recycled aluminium and designed to last 150 years. Furniture doesn't get more sustainable than that.
